The Portland Fire Department (PFD) is the largest professional fire department in Maine providing the City with both fire protection and emergency medical services (EMS) with staff of 240 uniformed personnel. Portland Fire Department currently staffs three advanced life support (ALS) ambulances, commonly referred to as Medical Crisis Units (MEDCU) with two paramedics each as part of its EMS system. Also as part of the EMS system, EMS personnel are assigned to fire apparatus to include six engine companies, two ladder companies, two Quints, one heavy rescue, with two or three firefighters and one officer for each apparatus respectively. The PFD is tasked with coverage at the Portland International Jetport with four air rescue vehicles, and the fireboat covers the waterfront and five islands.
In addition to emergency responses, the PFD also staffs a non-emergency program (one ambulance and two wheelchair cars) with off-duty firefighters under a separate agreement in the CBA.
