The Scott Challenge was very interesting this year. The most noteworthy event of the day was the weather. This year instead of sunny skies and warm temps we had a cold, windy, very rainy day. To say the least it was miserable. However we all put a smile on and had fun and did very good. We were able to field 2 teams this year for our sponsor Harpoon Brewery of Boston, MA. Team Octoberfest finished in 4th place with a team time of 7:30.44 and Team IPA finished in 8th place with a time of 8:59.73.
The best story of the day was Roger Robinson from Team IPA. Roger competed in the event last year for the first time and finished with a time of 6:30.72. He worked extremely hard over the past year and finished this year’s event with a time of 3:40.33. Almost 3 whole minutes better than last time! This excellent time ranked him in 6th place in the over 50 category. Team IPA also had two new members this year. Dale Dyer finished in 3:10.00 and Brendan Joyce finished in 3:01.40. The last member of Team IPA was Paul Halverson. Paul is a third timer in the challenge and finished the course in 2:48.33. This run bested his personal record by 10 seconds and landed him in 7th place in the over 40 division.
Team Octoberfest had some good news as well. Scott Labbe finished in 2:32.08. This ranked him in 5th place in the over division. Not bad for a guy that worked the night before the challenge and was up most of the night. Justin Bragdon finished in 2:25.84 beating his personal record by 5 seconds. Chris Tillotson finished in 2:32.52. John Hardy had a tough run with a couple of penalties that added time to his run but he still managed to finish in 2:32.73. Andy Hammond rounded out the team with a time of 2:41.39.

The Scott Combat Challenge has been in existence since 1991; however the Portland Fire Department didn’t make their debut until 2004. 7 members of the P.F.D participated in the obstacle course set up to mimic firefighter daily activities on the job. Racing against the clock and each other the members had a very respectable showing for their first time. The members that participated and their times are as follows.
Ryan Thomson - 2:23.89
Chris
Tillotson – 2:24.75
Justin
Bragdon – 2:32.30
Andy Hammond
– 2:36.82
Scott Labbe –
2:39.02
Paul
Halverson – 3:09.32
Stan Tenpenny
– 4:35.50
Five members were on a team that took the 3 best times for a total time of 7:25.46 which was placed the 9th out of 13 teams.
2005 saw a return trip to the Scott Challenge. This time the members were able to secure a sponsor for 1 team. Our sponsor was Harpoon Brewery of Boston, MA. Again 5 members participated on the team. There times were:
Ryan Thomson – 2:16.10
Chris
Tillotson – 2:18.87
Scott Labbe –
2:25.49
Justin
Bragdon – 2:30.20
Andy Hammond
– 2:38.32
The team placed 5th out of 9 teams. However the combined time of 7:00.46 was good enough to earn the team the distinction of State of Maine champions for fastest team.
Paul Halverson made a return trip and scored a time of 2:58.58. There were also two mew members to participate in the challenge. John Hardy had a time of 2:27.14 and Roger Robinson scored a time of 6:30.72. (Not bad for a guy over 50!)
